Black Widow and Winter Soldier Team Up, Please

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is entering a whole new phase of cinematic magic, with a slew of exciting new movies and shows planned. The wait has been long, with the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) delaying the release of many Marvel projects, but for fans, this new phase could be the best yet. Although Marvel has announced films such as Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, both slated for 2022, there’s one particular concept that many fans would absolutely love to see – and one that hasn’t been featured in any major Marvel projects yet.

The Winter Soldier, also known as Bucky Barnes, has been an MCU fan favorite character since the 2011 film. Captain America: The First Avenger. Steve Rogers’ best friend, Bucky is kidnapped by Hydra at one point and brainwashed into a super-soldier known as the Winter Soldier. Bucky is eventually cured of his programming in Wakanda and becomes a valued member of the Avengers inner circle.

The Winter Soldier character has appeared in seven Marvel films, including the blockbuster Avengers: Endgame. Played by actor Sebastian Stan, Bucky / Winter Soldier has become a major favorite, with fans praising the character’s development over time and the unique attributes Barnes brings to the Avengers team.

Most recently, Barnes was a star actor in the hit Disney + series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, a series that perfectly sets up Phase Four of the MCU while also shining a light on how Barnes handled a post-Captain America world.

The Black Widow starred in an independent film

Another fan favorite Marvel hero is The Black Widow. Played by Scarlett Johansson, Black Widow was first introduced in the 2010 film Iron man 2 and went on to appear in nine major films in total. A key member of the Avengers team, Black Widow / Natasha Romanoff is an expert in espionage and melee, an invaluable member of the Avengers, and close friends of Hawkeye and Bruce Banner / Hulk.

Black Widow makes her last appearance in the 2021 film Black Widoww, a film that takes place after the events of the 2016 film Captain America: Civil War. For fans, the film was a chance to get a glimpse into Black Widow’s childhood and adolescence – while also getting them to see a beloved character whose fate had been established in Avengers: Endgame.

Over the years, fans have had very few opportunities to see Black Widow and the Winter Soldier team up – and on the rare occasions they’ve shared the screen, their interactions have been minimal. Recently, some fans on Reddit discussed a project that would see the two characters team up.

“I know Natasha’s story is over and Bucky has Sam, but I always wish I could have teamed up with these two assassins,” the original poster wrote, adding, “I feel like we stole Black Widow and Winter Soldier spying / murdering stuff on their run.

Another fan agreed, writing, “I’ll also point out that the Bucky / Nat dynamic is especially funny considering the two are assassins who defect from their bossy controllers, and even met in Ukraine this time around, so you might have an interesting resentment there. ”

For now, with the Winter Soldier set to take a starring role in future MCU projects and the Black Widow storyline at the end, it seems unlikely these fans will get their wish come true. But if Marvel has proven anything, it’s that fans should expect the unexpected.
