Did Marvel Just Tease the Nick Fury of the MCU’s Midnight Sons?

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness dramatically changed the state of the MCU. The film, which introduces America Chavez to the MCU and sees Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff tackle the wilds of the multiverse, wasn’t afraid to tackle big topics or feature big names. While there’s a lot to enjoy about the movie, Marvel fans are still thinking eagerly – “what’s next?” Those particularly interested in the mystical (and slightly spooky) side of Marvel will likely be paying attention to rumors regarding the Midnight Sons’ own MCU version.

For those unaware, the Midnight Sons are a group of heroes with strong ties to the darker and creepier side of Marvel Comics. They’ve always fought demons, zombies, and other terrifying creatures, and from the start the team has included fan-favorite characters like Ghost Rider, Blade, and Doctor Strange himself. While Multiverse of Madness didn’t provide additional information about joining the Midnight Sons, it did provide information about who the man responsible might be, a la Nick Fury for the Avengers, narrowing the pool of applicants.

Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystical Arts

Warning – the rest of this article contains spoilers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

When the Midnight Sons first appeared in 1992, they were organized by none other than Doctor Stephen Strange. Their task was to battle the mother of all demons, Lilith, and the party included notable characters like Blade, Morbius, and two different Ghost Riders. While it’s always been possible that Strange could lead the MCU’s Midnight Sons, it seems rather unlikely in the wake of Multiverse of Madness.

The film’s post-credits scene depicts the master of the mystical arts departing to the Dark Dimension alongside Charlize Theron’s Clea, a character with a lot of history with the (now former) Sorcerer Supreme. With Strange seemingly tackling this new crisis personally, he doesn’t seem like he could be the “chair guy” for the Sons.

Blade, the walking half-vampire

Marvel Studios Blade

First on many fans’ list of potential members for the MCU’s Midnight Sons is one of its earliest members: Eric Brooks, AKA Blade. While a standalone movie featuring the character is on the way, Mahershala Ali lent her voice to the character’s off-screen appearance in the post-credits scene for Eternals. His short cameo addressing Dane Whitman (the future Black Knight) left much speculation that he was recruiting in a way that has become synonymous with Nick Fury.

The problem here is that Blade isn’t one to lead from afar. Beyond that, Black Knight is traditionally a member of the Avengers, not the Midnight Sons. The Daywalker was likely drawn to the Ebon Blade to ensure the relic didn’t fall into the wrong hands, given his knowledge of the occult. Despite being a shoo-in for the group, Blade is much more likely to reflect Steve Rogers’ role as the frontline leader, rather than Nick Fury’s aloof guiding hand.

Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme

Following the events of Multiverse of Madness, Wong finds himself in a position he once held: Sorcerer Supreme without the influence (or interference) of Stephen Strange. However, with the Scarlet Witch gone after her destruction of the Darkhold, Kamar-Taj ravaged by her earlier attack, and Strange on an excursion with Clea to the Dark Dimension, Wong is in a position of pre-eminence among wielders of the mystical arts. . His primary duty as Sorcerer Supreme is to protect the world, but he is understaffed and potentially overwhelmed.

Wong is in a great position to play Nick Fury for the Midnight Sons. He has been a leader of the group in the comics, most notably in the Damnation storyline, which featured a slate that most resembles what could come to life in the MCU. This group included characters we’ve seen (or heard of) before, like Blade and Moon Knight, as well as characters on the horizon like Ghost Rider, Man-Thing, Elsa Bloodstone, and Iron Fist. As Wong strives to train the next generation of wizards, his hand-picked Midnight Sons can combat the threats that lurk in the night.

While the Avengers have defined the MCU thus far, other teams are starting to take center stage. The Guardians of the Galaxy have fought alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes before, and more groups like the Fantastic Four, Young Avengers, and X-Men are coming fast. The time has come for an appearance by the Midnight Sons to continue Marvel’s vision of horror that began with moon knight and Multiverse of Madness and will continue in the next Halloween special, Marvel zombies, and Blade.

Although a release date is yet to be announced, Marvel horror fans should keep their eyes on October for the Halloween special.
