Jessica Drew would be Olivia Wilde’s “spider woman” –

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, so does Sony’s Spider-Verse.

While last week we received conflicting information about the budding franchise, we’re happy to say today that there is a promising new report on one of the most interesting solo films in development in the company.

Between the next Venom after, Morbius, and even the recent announcement Kraven the hunter project, it’s easy for most people to forget that Sony also has plans for a Spider woman movie. Considering that Kraven has both a star and a director, while the latter only has one director – Olivia Wilde – that makes sense.

Last year, when it was announced that Wilde was committed to directing a new Marvel movie, she had no problem practically telling the world what it was. With his second effort Don’t worry darling on the horizon (then), she had to put the film on the back burner. However, according to The Illuminerdi, it looks like the ball has finally started rolling on Wilde’s project as new casting details have emerged.

According to sources close to the site, Wilde’s film is expected to revolve around the original Spider-Woman herself: Jessica Drew!

While this may seem like a no-brainer to fans, given that characters like Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson have taken up the torch in the comics, a long-awaited and fan-favorite character could finally make his live debut …should the report be true.

Again, we have to remind you that, because this is not an official Sony, Marvel, or major trade report, it should be taken with a grain of salt. Everything is possible, however.

For those unfamiliar with the character, after being exposed to a lethal amount of uranium as a child, Jessica was injected with a regenerating serum made from arachnid blood by her father. Due to the slow effects of the serum, she was placed in a genetic accelerator by her parents and remained in stasis for decades until she was cured. However, upon waking up, she is biologically 17 years old and she also has some superhuman side effects.

Even though it looks like the studio wants to stay true to the character’s origin, the site reports a few liberties that are being taken. For example, the studio is looking to cast an actress between 25 and 35 for the role. It is not yet known if this will be the same age of the character.

Throughout her rich comic book history, Spider-Woman has been a member of both the Avengers and SWORD. She even played a key role in the Secret invasion scenario.

As cool as it is to see her appear in the next limited series, it looks like the timelines for the two projects don’t match up at the moment. Still, its introduction to Sony’s Spider-Verse could still mean the studio is getting closer to a possible deal to possibly merge with the MCU. We’ll just have to wait and see.
