Marvel Comics: all the news from the NYCC

New York Comic Con 2022 has sadly come to an end, and Marvel Comics did not disappoint. With announcements, special panels, and a look into the future, comic book fans should be happy right now. So, let’s take a look at the NYCC news for the past few days.

Captain America’s Next Steps

Captain America: Cold War is one of the most anticipated crossovers in the Marvel Universe. This information came during a special recording of This Week in Marvel. Podcast hosts Ryan Penagos and Lorraine Cink were joined by current writers of the two Cap comics, Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing and Tochi Onyebuchi. They were also joined by Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Alanna Smith.

Captain America: Symbol of Truth saw the mysterious return of Ian Rogers as Nomad, but what are his intentions? And what will that mean for Sam Wilson and the escalating conflict in Wakanda? And the end of Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #5 showed us how far Bucky Barnes will go to stop the Outer Circle.

Next coming from our star-studded team, we have a special one-shot Captain America and the Winter Soldier. This will debut the new Winter Soldier costume and show us Becky’s new persona for the upcoming war. We got a little preview of the one shot, with variant covers for the special by Carnero and Alex Maleev. And then we have the main event.

Captain America: Cold War hits our shelves in April 2023. And it’s going to be an event Cap fans won’t want to miss. This will be the culmination of all the threats and mysteries that Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson have faced in their respective series. We’ll also learn more about the origin of Steve’s shield, finally the Outer Circle, and more. This story will have a lasting impact on Captain America’s 80-year legacy, and you won’t want to miss it.

NYCC gave us a little glimpse into the future, with new promotional artwork by Daniel Acuña. Check it out and keep an eye out for more updates on Captain America: Cold War as they are released.

Mysterious beginnings

Some mysteries are best left unsolved. However, we want some of them fixed right now! And that’s the case for a super secret series coming to us next year. Although we don’t have much information about the new series from Jonathan Hickman and Valerio Schiti, they did reveal some new character designs during the panel. This, along with the tagline, gives us food for thought. There will be more information before its release in 2023, so keep an eye out for updates!

New worlds and new voices

At Voices of Marvel: The World Outside Your Window panel on Saturday, we had a few new titles and one-shots announced. These titles will be released in time to celebrate Black History Month and will feature both Black heroes and Black creators. There are so many titles to look forward to, and it’s hard to decide which one excites us the most.

The Voices of Marvel: Wakanda Forever

A special one-shot that will feature stories from some of our favorite creators, plus new Marvel talent. The one-shot will give us more stories from some of our favorite characters. Black Panther, Shuri, Okoye and many more will go on new adventures, and the creators will continue to expand the world of Wakanda. The Voices of Marvel: Wakanda Forever is due out in February next year.

Lineage: Daughter of Blade

Earlier this year, we were introduced to Brielle Brooks. She’s a nice girl who has problems at school. And all because she develops vampiric superpowers and makes undead enemies. To top it off, Bri has some hard truths to accept; that she is the daughter of the infamous Daywalking vampire hunter, Blade! Created by writer Danny Lore and artist Karen S. Darboe. He’s a character we’ve been waiting for for quite some time, and we’re sure he’ll be a hit!

Silver Surfer: Ghost Light

Another new character who will launch his own limited series, presented by John Jennings and Valentine De Landro. After Toni Brooks and her family relocate to the sleepy town of Sweetwater, things aren’t quite as they seem. Toni and her family begin to unravel a mystery that appeals to the Silver Surfer himself. It will also introduce us to a new character, 54 years in the making. But who is the phantom light? A special look at a character sketch gives us some answers, but there’s still a lot we don’t know.

Bishop: College of War

Prepare for an all-out brawl that could put Krakoa’s fate in question. TV writer J. Holtham and artist Sean Damien Hill will see Lucas Bishop take control of a new group of X-Men. While Krakoa is a vulnerable island paradise, Bishop and his students will do whatever they can to save all mutants. Armor, Surge, Cam Long, Aura Charles, and Amass will join Bishop to deal with the threat. Find out more about Bishop’s visions for the X-Men team in this limited series next year.

Sinister Stars and Family Reunions

Saturday also saw a special panel called The next big thing which introduced us to some of the biggest events in the Marvel Universe. We finally have answers to things that have been brought up throughout the year.

Sins of Sinister

This epic X-Men event begins in January. A giant one-shot from Kieron Gillen and Lucas Werneck will kick things off and trigger the downfall of Krakoa as we know it. As this new Krakoa begins, be sure to check out the limited series links which will give you more background on the story.

Immoral X-Men, Storm & The Brotherhood of Mutants and Earthworms will tackle the dark future of the Marvel Universe, taking us 10 years, 100 years and 1000 years into the future. Writers Kieron Gillen, Al Ewing, and Si Spurrier will handle these limited series. And artists Paco Medina, Patch Zircher and Alessandro Vitti will draw a number from each story. All of this will come to a head in the one-hit finale, Sins of Sinister: Dominion.

guardians of the galaxy

While very little has been announced for this title, we were given a quick preview of Spring 2023, when the Guardians of the Galaxy will return to rebuild their family. The series is slated for release next year, and we’re sure there will be plenty more information in the months to come.

Here is my Shero

The last day of NYCC, Marvel Women panel gave us the latest of our comic book announcements from the weekend. First, we learned the exciting news that a new season of the Marvel Women The podcast will debut on November 3, with the theme for the season being “The Super Power of Mentorship.” After that, we got some pretty exciting comic book news!

Marvel Women the one-shot anthology will return next year in March. Last year’s issue was a huge success and a great way to showcase not only our female characters, but also the creators behind them.

We will also receive a Thief and Gambit limited series debuting March next year, written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Carlos Gomez. At the same time, a limited series of 5 issues X-23: Mortal Regenesis will start in March. This series will be written by Erica Schultz with illustrations by Edgar Salazar. To top it off, our favorite British mutant will be back on the page with Betsy Braddock: Captain Britain #1. The series will be written by Toni Howard and will be released in February 2023.

A sign of things to come

NYCC 2022 is now over, but it left us with so much. With plenty of comic book, TV show, and movie announcements, we’ve got enough to go on for a little while. While there’s still a lot we don’t know, the little tastes we were given definitely piqued our interest!
