Marvel’s New Trans Superhero Arrives Just In Time For Pride
Just in time for Pride Season, Marvel introduces audiences to their favorite new superhero, Escapade, which will debut when Marvel Voice: Pride #1written by Charlie Jane Anders, arrives June 22.
Getaway, aka Shela Sexton, is a trans mutant who is “a total goof” according to Anders. “She’s a cool weirdo who has a super strong sense of justice and deep loyalty to her friends.” She also has a very unique power. Although she can only maintain it for a few hours at a time, Escapade “can instantly switch physical locations with another person or exchange specific physical or abstract attributes such as possessions, organizational status, skills, powers superhuman and even situations!” according to Marvel. There is a catch, however: to remove the switch, she must be within seven feet of her target, and the chances of accidents increase with the complexity of the situation.
Fortunately, Escapade does not escape alone. She has a loyal sidekick, her “techie” best friend Morgan Red, who of course has an arsenal of useful (and stolen) tools hidden away for any occasion. “Together, Escapade and Morgan travel the Marvel Universe as professional thieves, robbing criminal and corrupt organizations…until they meet Emma Frost and Destiny. [of the X-Men] forever changes the course of Escapade’s life.
For author Anders, writing the story of Escapade was a dream come true. “I’ve loved the Marvel Universe for as long as I can remember, and I may or may not sing the Spider Man cartoon theme in the shower on a regular basis. So I was thrilled to be able to introduce a whole new hero alongside all my favorites,” Anders said. “I hope Escapade and Morgan Red inspire trans and non-binary people around the world to believe that they too can fight for justice with the power of creativity and chosen family.”
Along with Anders, the artist duo and Eisner-nominated cartoonists Ro Stein and Ted Brandt helped bring Escapade to life with the colors of Tamra Bonvillain.
Brandt shared how much it meant to them to be on the project. “Now more than ever, we need a hero like Shela Sexton for people to look up to,” he explained. “It was a real honor and privilege to be part of his creative process!”
Stein shared Brandt’s enthusiasm. “It’s very exciting to be a part of introducing a new character to Marvel comics,” they said. “Working with the Charlie Jane script has been a lot of fun, and I hope people enjoy reading Escapade as much as we did preparing for its first outing on the page.”
In Voices of Marvel: Pride #1, readers will discover Escapade and her life as a transmutant, superheroine and thief. It will also see her become involved in X-Men as “a deadly prophecy is unveiled in her future”. Beyond that, it’s already known when we’ll see Escapade next, as it’s scheduled to appear in a special story arc from New Mutants scheduled for this fall.
