MCU Showrunner Kevin Feige Once Considered Leaving Marvel For DC

Many people have contributed to the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the media giant’s rise to the top of the film industry.

Feige spearheaded Marvel’s decision to create a shared universe for some of the superhero characters in their collection, which led to the launch of “Iron Man,” the “Avengers,” and other spin-off movies and series that have captivated fans over the years.

According to a new claim, Feige may not have been around to help continue Marvel’s recent cinematic triumph as he was set to leave the company to join DC due to internal disputes. Although the issue seems to have been forgotten, at the time things were very dicey, and many Marvel movie fans now know that today may never have existed.

During Phase 2, it was unknown that Feige was unhappy with Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter, to whom he reported at the time. Feige wanted a less restrictive rein on the type of films he could push forward and the characters he could feature. Perlmutter, on the other hand, was unwilling to make such a compromise, prompting a disgruntled Feige to seriously consider leaving Marvel for rivals DC.

According to a recent Puck News coin (via Screen Rant), Insider Matthew Belloni mentioned the potential move that didn’t materialize when discussing DC’s future with Warner Bros. Discovery, citing how showrunner CEO David Zaslav was pressured into stealing Feige.

“Zaslav could make another run at Feige, who I’m told spoke quite seriously with Warners a few years ago when he was looking to escape the scrutiny of then-crazed Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter,” said in The report.

Feige’s dissatisfaction with the course of business at Marvel could not have been easily dispelled by mere words and broken promises; thus, keeping it was a challenge. Back then, everything was on the line and either side could have played any hand to get their wishes.

During the internal struggle at the top, some franchise players knew about all of this. In a past interview with The IndependentMarvel actor Mark Ruffalo said Feige pushed for more diversity in the MCU, particularly a female-led Marvel image.

He said, “When we did the first Avengers, Kevin Feige said to me, ‘Look, I might not be here tomorrow.’ and he’s like, ‘ike doesn’t believe anyone is going to go into a great movie starring women.’ so if I’m still here tomorrow, you’ll know I won this battle.

Even fans viewed Perlmutter as an extremely thrifty Division character with budgets to match. He’s also been rumored to have made nasty racist remarks in the past, which may have led to his blocking of more diverse Marvel projects.

Former Disney CEO Bob Iger played a role in keeping Feige on

Feige ultimately triumphed in a long ideological struggle with Perlmutter once Marvel Studios was absorbed into Walt Disney Studios. Other showrunners, including then-Disney CEO Bob Iger, worked hard to persuade Feige to put aside his outside interests and stay with Marvel.

Iger describes in his book The ride of a lifetime how he played a key role in persuading Perlmutter to allow development of various films such as “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel.” In October 2019, Iger also oversaw Feige’s elevation to Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer alongside his role as President of Marvel Studios, reducing Perlmutter’s control over the MCU and other aspects of the Marvel brand. .

Feige is no longer at a disadvantage, as he no longer reports directly to Perlmutter. He lived to fight another day for diversity in the MCU and finally secured it, which put a more definitive pause on his exit plan at least for now.

Kevin Feige has more creative freedom now

With Kevin Feige at the helm of Marvel’s creative direction, media conglomerates have seen an increase not only in popularity but also in profitability. “Black Panther” and “Captain Marvel,” two films that may never have seen the light of day, have grossed billions of dollars and are among the ten most successful Marvel movies of the past decade.

Additionally, the Avengers franchise, which was founded on Feige’s shared-universe concept, has surpassed many big-budget films in terms of box office receipts, even inspiring DC to produce its own crossover films.

Feige helped the MCU boast of its extremely broad scope of characters and stories and is now seen as a much-needed leader for Marvel Studios as it enters Phase 4. As a result, the idea that he was about to leave Disney/Marvel due to their differences with Perlmutter seems like the biggest mistake that ever happened.
