Angela Bassett is, to paraphrase one of her iconic roles, simply the best. A versatile performer, she has worked with filmmakers like Spike Lee, John Singleton and Kathryn Bigelow, playing everything from leading lady looking for love, to several real-life heroes and icons, and a literal African queen.

Born in New York and a graduate of the Yale School of Drama, she began her career in television, before making her film debut with a small role in the 1986 films. F/X. In the early 90’s, Bassett began to make a name for himself with outstanding performances in Boyz in the hood in 1991 and Malcolm X in 1992. The following year, she shone in her breakthrough role as Tina Turner in the biopic What’s love got to do with it? For her powerful performance, she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
