‘The Northman’ Director Robert Eggers Explains Why His Style Is ‘Antithetical’ To Making A Marvel Movie

The man from the north Director Robert Eggers became a popular filmmaker after his first two unique films. The witch and Lighthouse are different from many other horror movies and that’s mostly because of the unique vision that Eggers brings to these films.

The same can be said of Eggers’ latest film, The man from the north, but he had to deal with a little more studio interference. Eggers’ style often doesn’t meet what a major studio would want, which is why he thinks his version of directing a movie is quite different from directing a Marvel movie.

A24 has become known for distributing artistic and independent horror films. These horror movies generally do well with reviews, but get a mixed reaction from audiences. Eggers’ first two films, The witch and Lighthouse, were made with A24. Although that means the budget is much smaller, Eggers has more creative freedom.

The man from the north is Eggers’ first film with an expensive $90 million budget. The film is distributed by Focus Features in the United States and Universal Pictures internationally. In an interview with The reading listEggers knew he wouldn’t get the ‘final cut’ this time, but it was a risk he was willing to take to be allowed to do so. The man from the north the way he wanted.

“I knew when I gave the script to the studio that I wasn’t going to get the final cut of this movie,” Eggers said. “And it was a risk I was willing to take. The studio took a big risk by letting someone who made two sensationalized arthouse movies make a big fucking single-camera Viking movie with all of their department heads.

The director doesn’t think a Marvel movie would work well with him

Eggers tells The Playlist that all of his movies so far have been self-generated projects. The Northman may have been edited or modified in some ways by a studio, but it’s still something unique to Eggers. The director says he’s been approached to do other projects, but he doesn’t think those projects would fit well with his style. This would include a major blockbuster like a Marvel movie.

“I only did self-generated work,” Eggers explained. “I understand how lucky I am to be in this situation. People came to me with stuff. Even though I didn’t have a final edit, we went into this knowing that it was a Robert Eggers movie, and all it’s going to be. I don’t see how that would be beneficial on a movie where I’m a hire director. Everything I do is contrary to directing. a Marvel movie.

While Marvel doesn’t give its filmmakers complete creative control, the studio places a lot of trust in its writers. For example, directors like Taika Waititi and the Russo Brothers had only worked on smaller projects or even television before being handed the reins of massive studio productions like Thor: Ragnarok and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. These ended up being big hits for Marvel, proving that Marvel movies often benefit from having directors with artistic visions.
