What I heard: Blade should appear in “Werewolf By Night”

Over the weekend, exciting news came to my desk about an upcoming release from Marvel Studios. What I heard is that Blade, the world famous and cool elite vampire hunter, is set to return to our screens in the night werewolf Halloween special. Although this is not officially announced, and we have yet to confirm with other sources*, this source was previously very reliable with insider information like this, and so we have deemed this information exciting was worth sharing.

[*Editor’s note: Just in the few minutes since we first posted this report, another previously reliable source has informed us that they have also heard that Blade is going to be in Werewolf By Night, backing up this report.]

It’s no surprise to any of us who have speculated about the future of the supernatural side of the MCU. Already introduced by voice in Eternals, At Mahershala Ali Blade could fit naturally into the short special in a number of ways. The simplest explanation is that he might have to eliminate Vampire By Night (a relative of Werewolf By Night and rumored cast for Laura Donnelly). Or more interestingly, Blade could recruit the werewolf to join a supernatural strike force (maybe midnight sons) against a major threat, which would connect to the Dane Whitman recruitment scene in Eternals. This would seem to give Blade a continuing Nick Fury-style role in the MCU.

The first connection between Blade and Jack Russell that I thought of was the Darkhold. A book of black magic already seen in Wanda Vision and Agents of SHIELD, the Darkhold is responsible for the creation and destruction of vampires and werewolves in the Marvel Comics Universe. The Darkhold also takes into account Midnight Sons’ crazy crossover “Midnight Massacre”, where the werewolf is recruited to save Blade from being possessed by the black book. With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness should feature the Darkhold again, and night werewolf Should introduce both werewolves and vampires to the MCU, it’s possible the next movie will use the Darkhold to plant the seeds for the Special and Blade’s potential role.

Darkhold Blade vs Night Werewolf
Yeah, the 90s were weird.

But in the comics, Russell and Blade only interacted twice. They briefly faced each other in 1993, during the son of midnight story mentioned above, then crossed paths again in the 2010s when Deadpool’s failed marriage sparked a series of monster wars in New York City. That’s not much source material to speculate about their relationship in the MCU. But then, above all, I realized that Both Blade and the Werewolf are enemies of Dracula.

As we detailed in a previous article, Count Dracula is Blade’s number one enemy in the comics, having killed his mentor and countless friends over the decades. In turn, the werewolf and Dracula also have a long history. Not only is Dracula responsible for the werewolf curse that befell Jack Russell’s family generations ago, but Russell himself has clashed with Dracula many times, starting with the crossover Tomb of Dracula/Werewolf By Night in 1974 and continuing in Deadpool’s Monster Wedding storyline in 2014-2017. In fact, most of their modern conflicts have gone through Russell’s role as leader of the Legion of Monsters , a team he is more closely aligned to than the Midnight Sons. Beyond werewolves and vampires, it will be interesting to see if Marvel Studios leverages the potential of the werewolf story to unlock as much monster mayhem across the MCU as possible. In the meantime, it looks like all signs are pointing to members of Blade’s recruiting team to take on Dracula in the next one. Blade movie.

By filming on night werewolf is gearing up this month (expected to be under the direction of acclaimed musical storyteller Michael Giacchino), we hope to hear more about this highly anticipated project very soon, as well as the role At Mahershala Ali Blade could serve. Shooting for Blade’s own movie is still slated for around August, with pre-production and casting in full swing.
